A managed service provider's entire business model depends on servicing many clients' infrastructure with a small team, and that only works with a remote monitoring and management platform doing the watching that a human otherwise would. Without one, 'managed' means someone remembers to check periodically, which does not scale past a handful of clients and does not catch problems before a client notices them.
The comparison between RMM platforms comes down to a smaller set of things than the feature lists suggest: how much can be automated without a technician touching each client individually, how noisy the default alerting is, and how well it multi-tenants — because managing forty clients through forty separate dashboards is not actually managed at scale, it's forty single-client tools glued together by a login list.
Alert fatigue is what kills an RMM deployment inside the first quarter if it isn't tuned deliberately. A platform that pages a technician for every disk approaching seventy per cent capacity across two hundred managed endpoints produces so much noise that genuine problems get lost in it, and technicians learn to ignore the channel entirely. Tuning thresholds per client, and per criticality of the endpoint, is the unglamorous work that determines whether the tool is actually useful.
Automation is the actual value proposition, not visibility. A platform that only shows you a problem exists is barely better than a client calling to complain. One that can automatically remediate the common cases — clearing disk space, restarting a stalled service, deploying a patch — is what lets a small team service a large client base, and that automated remediation library is worth more in the buying decision than almost any dashboard feature.
